Hackers and thieves calling you to inform you that your computer has been infected,
hacked, or otherwise compromised. Don't fall for this scam!!
A fairly common trick for hackers to get money from you is to call you with the bad news
that your computer is either infected with viruses and spyware, or that your computer has
been hacked into. The caller will claim to be from Microsoft, or another reputable
company. They usually use a well known company name to gain your trust. The real
issue is that Microsoft, or any other real company will NEVER call you to say that your
computer is infected, hacked, or anything else! The only company that may ever call
you about your computer being infected is your cable provider. They may suspend your
account and notify you if your computer is sending out viruses or spam. Beyond that, no
one will call you.
First off, for anyone to know that your computer is infected or hacked, would have to
have hacked into your computer illegally first to even know anything about your
computer! The best practice when these companies call you is to hang up immediately.
DO NOT allow them remote access to your computer, they will steal information, photos,
documents, and infect your computer to get further information.
You can also report them to Better Business Bureau or the Internet Crime Division. If
you would also email me as well so I can do what I can to turn in the offenders, and to
warn other customers.
