Microsoft security essentials was a free antivirus software that was provided by Microsoft.
As far as free antivirus, it was an OK product, and was Microsoft's first real attempt to clean
up Windows after Windows Defender. Unfortunately, neither essentials or defender were
not very good protection. Essentials has since been abandoned by Microsoft and is no
longer supported. If you are using Microsoft Security Essentials, you should remove it and
install another product. Windows defender is still around, but if you do have proper
antivirus software installed, activated, and updated, then in most cases, you should disable
If you are looking for a free antivirus software to replace essentials, right now I recommend
Avast free antivirus, but for real protection, I would recommend Kaspersky Internet Security.
